Funding for the NEA
September 17, 1997
Federal funding
for the NEA has led to the flourishing of arts organizations
in small cities and rural areas across the country. In
my state of Maryland, local arts agencies are able to
leverage federal dollars for their fundraising efforts.
Without federal support, Marylanders wouldn't have the
Puppet Company [Co.] in Glen Echo, the Bluebird
Blues Festival at Prince George's Community College, the
Writers Center in Bethesda, or the University of Maryland's
music programs.
I am committed to protecting the federal role in the arts.
We should not become the only civilized country in the
world that does not support the arts.
